Publicly managed aquarium (Municipality of Trieste)
Region: Friuli Venezia Giulia (Trieste)

The Marine Aquarium was built in 1933, adapting the systems in the rooms of one side of the Central Fish Market building and precisely of the part that includes the clock tower.
25 tanks were built with a variable capacity from 200 to 2500 liters and a central tank of 17,000 liters.
The water is taken from the sea at the base of the pier adjacent to the fish market and, through a powerful pumping system, is pushed into the clock tower at about 10 m. in height.
Here a large settling tank is filled, from which the water, by fall, is delivered to the ground floor. The system is therefore an open circle which, although lacking adequate filtering, has the advantage of continuously replacing the water, leaving its plankton content intact.

Of the two exhibition floors, the lower one houses the aquariums, while in the upper one a vivarium has been set up, with terrariums and a central tank in which the biotope of the karst ponds has been recreated.
On the ground floor, in the large octagonal tank of about 10,000 liters, small elasmobranchs (sharks and rays) are housed.
The fauna housed at the Civic Aquario Marino is made up of marine species coming mainly from the Gulf of Trieste, including various groups of coelenterates, annelids, molluscs, echinoderms, crustaceans and fish.
The Aquarium itself is developed on the ground floor where there are thirty tanks of different sizes.
The five largest tanks represent the main environments of the upper Adriatic (mussel farming, submerged artificial reefs, wreck, pier and pelagic environment), while the smaller tanks host the typical species of the Mediterranean Sea, including lobsters, lobsters, sea bream, sea bass, scorpion fish, snapper, moray eel, mullet and murmur.
The first floor, on the other hand, is occupied by the Vivarium, where numerous species of amphibians and reptiles are hosted, with particular regard to the fauna of Friuli Venezia Giulia and neighboring regions.
Next to the traditional terrariums, where among other things it is possible to observe the three species of vipers of the North East of Italy, there is a large enclosure where the environment of the karst ponds has been reconstructed. Here the howls, common toads and green frogs reproduce regularly.
Next to this structure there is a large vertical development terrarium where large tropical specimens such as iguanas, pythons and boas are housed in rotation. During the winter months (November-February), the animals of the temperate zones are allowed to carry out a sort of lethargy, to stimulate their reproduction and to maintain a correct physiological balance.
